Colt Police Positive - Collector's Information, .38 Caliber, Factory Cutaway, Serial Number 3

 

Early Colt Police Positive .38 Serial Number 3 with 4" barrel - Blue finish with fire blue small parts and black stylized "C" hard rubber grips. Colt is the first factory cutaway of this model.

Colt Factory Letter documents Colt Police Positive .38/c serial number 3 revolver as 4" barrel, blue finish, stocks not listed, Special Notation "Skeleton", Shipped to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Company, Chicago, Illinois, January 17, 1906 in a one gun shipment.

In The Book of Colt Firearms, Robert Sutherland notes that "Approximately 60 revolvers were skeletonized of cut away, Including Serial #3. More cutaway arms were made in the Police Positive Model than in any other Colt cartridge revolver. Nevertheless, with some 60 produced the variation is still one of notable scarcity."

Early Colt Police Positive Serial Number 3 with 4" barrel - right side.  Most of the cutaway is to the left side of the revolver.  Just a slight cut is present on the right side at the top right of the stock.
