Colt Model 1911A1 U.S. Army .45 ACP - 1939 Navy Contract Serial Number 716589

Colt Model 1911A1 S/N 716589 1939 Navy Contract - This is one of 3,636 pistols produced in this contract.  It was in a shipment of 1,088 pistols shipped on December 18, 1939 to the Officer in Charge, Naval Supply Depot, Sewalls Point, VA.  Pistol also shipped April 5, 1944 to the U.S. Navy, Newport.  Slide has a matching serial number.

At approximately serial number 713646, all pistols were marked with an "R" in an oval near the disconnector hole for the provisional inspector Major Charles S. Reed, Officer of Outside Inspection assigned to Colt.  "G" signifying Government Contract is also present.

Pistol is "P" proofed on top of the slide in front of the rear sight and above the magazine catch.  Also note the "H" inspector's initial of Federick W. Hauff on the left side to the right of the magazine catch.  This was applied upon final ordnance inspection. Colt "VP" Verified Proof mark on upper left flat of the trigger guard. Barrel has small "G" proof ahead of lug.  Barrel also marked "COLT 45 AUTO" on left side and "P" on left lug.
